A heavy equipment operator works with heavy machinery like front-end loaders, cranes, compact equipment, backhoes, excavators, track hoes, bulldozers, forklifts, graders, powered shovels, sweepers, graders, rollers, trenchers, power shovels, solid waste collection vehicle and similar equipment.
There are excellent job opportunities in this field, since the need for such workers is going to increase because despite certain mitigating factors, like improving technology, which would reduce the need for manpower, there would still be a demand-supply gap on account of the increasing population and business growth. Infrastructure needs are expected to increase at a rapid pace. This will require roads, schools, hospitals and offices to be constructed. In order to cater to this growth, more and more equipment will be required, needing the services of specially trained operators. If the operator is employed in a metropolitan area, the earnings are definitely higher. The place and kind of work are the factors that determine the amount of remuneration.

One of the tools invented by man to make his work simpler is the machine. A typical machine is nothing but a tool that performs works, which are of repetitive nature. In scientific parlance, work is nothing but the act of exerting a force on an object such that the object is moved across a distance. A simple machine is a tool designed and developed to make the simple tools of pulling, lifting, and pushing objects.
Heavy machine or heavy machinery is referred to a complex machine doing a number of simple machine operations at the same time. The need for usage of heavy machinery arises from the fact that complex and complicated activities such as laying of roads, tilling and sowing seeds equidistantly spread over a vast area of agricultural fields ready for the commencement of agricultural operations can neither be performed with the help of simple machines, nor the labor force is capable of doing the complex and heavy activities at a relatively faster pace. Heavy machinery, or heavy equipment, meets the requirement of completing complex jobs at a relatively quicker pace of time, and in the bargain saving considerable amount of overheads.

When you think of construction equipment loaders are what normally cometo mind. Loaders are considered tractors with the bucket on the front of the tractor and the engine on the back as a counter weight for thework. Unlike excavators most loaders use wheels rather than tracks. The types of loaders and uses are listed below.
Front end Loader: This type of loader is also called a bucket loader orscoop loader because it has a wide square bucket that tilts to capture the dirt or to dig out an area. The bucker is a removable attachmentso you can also use it as a forklift.
You can also use a clamshelltype of bucket that opens to grab whatever you are working on in its jaws.
Loaders are used for snow removal, dirt removal, farming, andconstruction sites.
Skid and Track Loaders: A skid loader is a smaller loader than theaforementioned equipment. Skid loaders use 4 wheels rather than tracks, but they are similar to the mini excavator in design with a hydrauliclift and bucket on the front of the equipment. The difference is where the life arms are positioned. They are behind the driver’s shoulders rather than more forward of the cab.
Backhoe Loader: This type of loader combines two pieces of equipment into one. First off you have the traditional loader with the front-end bucket and the rear of the tractor has a backhoe. Inside the seat swivels so the operate can see what he or she is doing when operating the backhoe portion. When using the backhoe there are hydraulic stabilizers the operator will place on the ground in order to lift it off the ground a bit.
Loaders are very similar to excavators, but they each have their own uses. Most loaders are for the removal of debris or lifting rather than digging.

Whether it’s a forklift, backhoe or an even more complicated piece of machinery, heavy equipment isn’t something to be used by those who don’t know what they’re doing. These machines are meant to get a job done and get it done correctly and efficiently, but they can be dangerous in unknowing hands. That’s why so many turn to heavy equipment training to ensure proper handling and safety. And, in most cases, training is required to use a particular machine, or at least preferred by employers.
For those job hunting, it’s a fact the construction industry itself is pretty darn solid. It’s generally one of the country’s most booming industries on a year in and year out basis. Those who can operate heavy equipment and do it safely are in high demand. The work can include jobs in private industry, government and even in a person’s own personal businesses. With the proper training, the options are many and the chances for high paying jobs are quite high, too.
The field opens a lot of doors for potential workers as well. This is good for those who don’t know where they want to settle down, or prefer the options that come with a job that’s open just about anywhere.
Training for heavy equipment takes time and lengths will vary depending on the school in question. Getting training, however, is vital not only for good employment opportunities, but also to ensure personal safety. These machines are not like a child’s Tonka toy.
Training before touching a piece of heavy machinery is important for the following reasons:
* There are many different heavy machines. Getting training enables a worker to understand them all and also appreciate the nuances of the difference pieces of equipment.
* Safety. By going through a good training program, a potential worker will be apprised of the different safety measures that must be taken on different pieces of machinery. Even a simple forklift can be dangerous if not operated correctly, in accordance with proper procedures.
* Employability. Often times, the higher paying jobs (or any job) will require training before they’ll even talk to an operator. Proper schooling in the different machines opens a lot of doors.
* Mobility. Those who have training from nationally recognized schools will also generally receive job-placement assistance. Oftentimes this extends long after graduation. So, if a job is needed in a new location, the school can work to help make sure you find one.
If a good job with lots of possibilities is a goal, heavy equipment operating may be the way to go. However, heavy machinery is not like a simple automobile. These machines are meant to do serious work and they have their own subtleties that must be learned and mastered before an operator is considered safe in the driver’s seat.
