In these days, being practical is a must. This is the reason why most of the independent contractors prefer to rent construction equipment instead of buying their own. Most of the contractors tend to believe that by following this practice they are already saving themselves a good amount of sum.
Apart from that reason, these contractors are also avoiding several risks, which are obtainable when they buy their own, by renting construction equipment. For independent contractors, purchasing their own brand new heavy equipment can be risky since they don’t have a sufficient amount to spend on the machine. In addition, purchasing brand new construction equipment may also require an ample time to regain the investment.
The good thing now is that small or independent contractors no longer need to involve into a great risk just to own construction equipment. If you have built a site-built home before, you are not likely familiar with what a set crew does or why a crane operator is important. These facets are unique to the modular home industry; and they are extremely important. The set crew is important in placing the modules onto the foundation and securing them into place accurately. And without an expert crane operator, there is no way to lift the modules off the tractor trailer truck and onto your building site.
Set crews can be provided by the equipment manufacturers like caterpillar equipments, john deere equipments, case equipments, komatsu equipments etc. or can be subcontracted by your builder. Either is fine as long as they have experience with modular homes. However, often there may be some cost savings by hiring them directly or through your builder. Most crane operators are independent contractors, although manufacturers often have a list of operators they use regularly in your area. Regardless who recommends them, on the building site they are under the supervision of your general contractor.
Upon arrival of the set crew, the set crew chief inspects the foundation for manufacturer’s compliance and for any defects. If there are any problems that cause further delays in the setting of your home, there are additional hours of time charged to you for the set crew and crane operator to wait or reschedule. If this is due to your builder’s error, it is reasonable for him to pay these extra charges. Once inspected, the set crew guides and secures each module into place and removes transportation material from each module.
Once the modules are in place, the floors are leveled and bolted to the floor centers. In addition, the set crew places the steel columns for support in the crawl space or basement as outlined by the manufacturer. The set crew also sprays insulation in the perimeter walls and “marriage” walls where two modules come together to ensure good protection from the elements. And lastly, the roof system is attached and made flush to the home making it weather-proof. By the end of the process, the modular assembly is completed and protected from the outside.
The crane operator should be experienced in placing modular homes so that proper attachments to the modules do not damage the sections inadvertently. Set crews of course assist with this, but it helps to have a knowledgeable crane operator. Ideally, the crane operator has already surveyed your site prior to the arrival of the modular units and knows exactly where he can set up the crane. The terrain and access should be cleared as part of your excavation to allow enough room for the crane to arrive and locate itself for your modular home placement.
Most “sets” take either one or two days to complete depending on the home’s size and complexity of design. Because the modular must be unwrapped from transport and connected together while exposed, weather can influence the assembly. It is the set crews’ responsibility along with your builder’s role to protect your home during assembly from the weather. But assuming a good forecast, the modular home set usually proceeds quickly and smoothly. By the time the set crew leaves, your home looks as if it was built on-site practically overnight.

When you think of construction equipment loaders are what normally cometo mind. Loaders are considered tractors with the bucket on the front of the tractor and the engine on the back as a counter weight for thework. Unlike excavators most loaders use wheels rather than tracks. The types of loaders and uses are listed below.
Front end Loader: This type of loader is also called a bucket loader orscoop loader because it has a wide square bucket that tilts to capture the dirt or to dig out an area. The bucker is a removable attachmentso you can also use it as a forklift.
You can also use a clamshelltype of bucket that opens to grab whatever you are working on in its jaws.
Loaders are used for snow removal, dirt removal, farming, andconstruction sites.
Skid and Track Loaders: A skid loader is a smaller loader than theaforementioned equipment. Skid loaders use 4 wheels rather than tracks, but they are similar to the mini excavator in design with a hydrauliclift and bucket on the front of the equipment. The difference is where the life arms are positioned. They are behind the driver’s shoulders rather than more forward of the cab.
Backhoe Loader: This type of loader combines two pieces of equipment into one. First off you have the traditional loader with the front-end bucket and the rear of the tractor has a backhoe. Inside the seat swivels so the operate can see what he or she is doing when operating the backhoe portion. When using the backhoe there are hydraulic stabilizers the operator will place on the ground in order to lift it off the ground a bit.
Loaders are very similar to excavators, but they each have their own uses. Most loaders are for the removal of debris or lifting rather than digging.

Excavators are heavy equipment used in civil engineering and surface mining. An excavator, also called a 360-degree excavator or digger, sometimes abbreviated simply to a 360, is an engineering vehicle consisting of a backhoe and cab mounted on a pivot (turntable is a more apt description) atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. The term excavator is sometimes used as a general term for any piece of digging equipment.
Roles of Excavators
Excavators are used in many roles:
1- Digging of trenches, holes, foundations
2- Demolition
3- General grading/landscaping
4- Heavy lift, e.g. lifting and placing of pipes
5- River dredging
6- Mining, especially, but not only open-pit mining
7- Brush cutting with hydraulic attachments
Varieties of Excavators
Excavators for sale come in a wide variety of sizes. The smaller ones are called a mini-excavator or compact excavator. One manufacturer’s largest model weighs 84,980 kg (187,360 lb) and has a maximum bucket size of 4.5 m³ (5.9 yd³). The same manufacturer’s smallest mini-excavator weighs 1470 kg (3240 lb), has a maximum bucket size of 0.036 m³ (0.048 yd³) and the width of its tracks can be adjusted to 89 cm (35 inches). Another company makes a mini excavator that will fit through a doorway with tracks that can be adjusted to only 70 cm (28 inches) wide.
Examples of Excavators
1- Compact excavator
A compact hydraulic excavator is a tracked or wheeled vehicle with an approximate operating weight of 6 metric tons (13,228 lbs). It generally includes a standard backfill blade and features independent boom swing. The compact hydraulic excavator is also referred to as a mini excavator.
2- Dragline excavator
Dragline excavation systems are heavy equipment used in civil engineering and surface mining. In civil engineering the smaller types are used for road and port construction. The larger types are used in strip-mining operations to extract coal and these are amongst the largest mobile equipment (not water-borne), and weigh in the vinicity of 2000 metric tonnes, though specimens weighing up to 13,000 metric tonnes have also been constructed.
3- Bucket-wheel excavator
Bucket-wheel excavators are heavy equipment used in surface mining and civil engineering. The excavation component itself is a large rotating wheel mounted on an arm or boom. On the outer edge of the wheel is a series of scoops or buckets. As the wheel turns, the buckets remove soil or rock from the target area and carry it around to the backside of the wheel, where it falls onto a conveyor, which carries it up the arm toward the main body of the excavator. Additional conveyors then may carry it further; in some cases, several long conveyors are placed end-to-end, each supported by a large vehicular base.

With all the different skid steer manufacturers, like Mustang, Caterpillar, Bobcat, etc. you may find yourself wondering what is the best route to go. Here are some things you might want to consider when buying your next used skid steer for sale.
You first will need to decide whether your needs would be filled by a used unit or if you are at a point that a new unit would be best suitable for your needs, secondly you will need to determine the proper size machine for your application, depending on the type work you do, the largest or highest horsepower machine isn’t always the most efficient machine.
You will also need to decide if you were going to set a budget to spend or if you are going to be financing this unit. If you intend to purchase a unit outright, you will need to set your budget realistically. Some of the aggravation may stem from not being able to find a machine in the size range that also fit in the price range you are looking to spend. When shopping for a used unit, you must really pay attention to the unit, sometimes folks will let the glitter blind them, a machine with the best aesthetic value may not always be the best mechanical value. You need to look past shiny paint and new tires, you should do a complete evaluation on the machine, key points to check are as listed below.
1. Check for wear on key hinge point of the machine. Check for abnormal play in pinned joints on the boom lift arm. Check the bucket hinge pins and all bucket and lift cylinder pinned joints, always be sure to check both ends of the hydraulic cylinder ends.
2. Check for broken welds or cracks on structural components of the machine. You will want to inspect the boom lift arm, axle tubes and housings, check around hydraulic cylinder pinned joints.
3. Check for excessive oil or fuel leaks. Look over engine compartment, if accessible check under the cab of the unit as well. Don’t count on finding a used machine that is perfectly dry, but you don’t want oil standing in the belly of the unit either. Also keep in mind that just because the a unit has an oil leak doesn’t mean the unit has problems, it can be as simple as a lose hose fitting, or a failed
4. Check the steering and drivability of the machine. This could be one of the more important parts of the inspection, due to the nature of the problem these can be a more expensive fix and worse, it could be a safety issue as well. Drive the unit fully engaged forward, check that the machine tracks straight.
5. Check for engine wear. Keep in mind most skid steer loaders are powered by diesel engines, much different than conventional gasoline engine. Diesel engines are much louder than gasoline engines, they have a noticeable clatter at lower rpm’s.
6. Lastly, check the overall condition of the machine. This step of the evaluation is important in the sense that you will want a machine that looks professional and you will base a portion of your decision off your findings from this step. If you do purchase a used skid steer, if the paint and decals show a lot of wear, I would highly recommend a good touch up to the paint and replace the decals. This is usually inexpensive and will give your machine a better aesthetic value, especially important if you are a contractor, You want customers to feel confident in the equipment your using to complete their projects.

These machines are meant to get a job done and get it done correctly and efficiently, but they can be dangerous in unknowing hands. That’s why so many turn to heavy equipment training to ensure proper handling and safety. And, in most cases, training is required to use a particular machine, or at least preferred by employers.
For those job hunting, it’s a fact the construction industry itself is pretty darn solid. It’s generally one of the country’s most booming industries on a year in and year out basis. Those who can operate heavy equipment and do it safely are in high demand. The work can include jobs in private industry, government and even in a person’s own personal businesses. With the proper training, the options are many and the chances for high paying jobs are quite high, too.
The field opens a lot of doors for potential workers as well. This is good for those who don’t know where they want to settle down, or prefer the options that come with a job that’s open just about anywhere.
Training for heavy equipment takes time and lengths will vary depending on the school in question. Getting training, however, is vital not only for good employment opportunities, but also to ensure personal safety. These machines are not like a child’s Tonka toy.
Training before touching a piece of heavy machinery is important for the following reasons:

If a good job with lots of possibilities is a goal, heavy equipment operating may be the way to go. However, heavy machinery is not like a simple automobile. These machines are meant to do serious work and they have their own subtleties that must be learned and mastered before an operator is considered safe in the driver’s seat.
